Chronicle of the SACHS Fahrzeug- und Motorentechnik GmbH, formerly Nuremberg Hercules-Werke

The precursor of the current SACHS Fahrzeug- und Motorentechnik was founded on 5. April 1886 as the Nürnberger Hercules-Werke in Neumarkt by Carl Marschütz. He initially manufactured bicycles with eight employees. Eight years later the company had already grown to a total of 170 employees.

Production of almost 5.000 bicycles

Transit of the production facilities from Neumarkt to the Fürther Straße in Nuremberg

1898

 

Hercules develops an electro-vehicle, capable of 40 kph top speed; radius: 40 kilometer

1904

 

Production of the first motorcycles and a heavy goods vehicle with 1,2 t capacity

1928

 

Motorcycle production restart using JAP, Villiers, Moser, Bark, Sturmey-Archer and Sachs engines

1932

 

Production of three-wheeled automobiles with 200 cc-engines

1945

 

After World War 2 restart with 30 employees; production of milk urnes, later bicycles

Production of the first motorcycles with a 97 cc-Sachs-engine and a motorcycle with a 125 cc-Ilo-engine

1951

 

World record by Georg Dotterweich on a 50 cc-motor-assisted bicycle; average speed: 80 kph

1956

 

Hercules achieves the third place in the German registration statistics.
Production of the Hercules K100 with 98 cc-Sachs-engine

1957

 

Sale of Nürnberger Hercules-Werke GmbH to the swiss firm Fa. Kurotag AG (SACHS AG)

1962

 

Supply of the 50S Sachs engine; Production of the successful model K50
Development of the predecessor of modern Quads named KRAKA (Kraftkarren). This agile all-terrain vehicle with a total weight of only 528kg, a 400 cc engine and 18 HP had various functions in public services, forestry and military.

1963

 

Fichtel & Sachs AG, Schweinfurt takes over the Nürnberger Hercules-Werke GmbH

1964

 

Great sporting success through 222 factory and private riders: 1.049 gold-, 151 silver- and 58 bronze-medals

1965

 

Take-over of Zweirad-Union with the brand-names Victoria, Express and DKW by Fichtel & Sachs AG, Schweinfurt

1966

 

Transit of Fa. Nürnberger Hercules-Werke from on the Fürther Straße to the current premises in Nopitschstrasse

1970

 

Sachs introduces the world´s first motorcycle with a Wankel-engine: the W-2000
Production of the K125 for the German military

1979

 

Hercules has 1.400 employees

1982

 

Distribution of the Yamaha-scooters CV 50 and CV 80 under the brand-name Hercules

1983

 

Inauguration of the new high-level storage

1987

 

Introduction of the Saxonette (a bicycle with a 30 cc-wheel-hub engine)

1989

 

Production of 200.000 bicycles; Hercules has 800 employees; turnover approx. 156 Mio. DM

1990

 

Presentation of the first electro-moped to reach production stage at the IFMA in Cologne

1992

 

Hercules builds the motorcycle K 180 BW for the German Federal Armed Forces

1993

 

Hercules distributes Peugeot scooters under licence

1995

 

New shareholder structures: the bicycle department is sold to the Dutch ATAG-group, the motoring department is renamed to SACHS Fahrzeug- und Motorentechnik GmbH

1997

 

Development and production of a new 125 cc-range
Deal with Daimler-Benz about the production of the Mercedes Hybrid-Bike

1998

 

Partnership with Malaguti in the scooter sector
The SACHS Fahrzeug- und Motorentechnik GmbH is sold to the Dutch Winning Wheels Group

1999

 

Development of the Roadster-range (Roadster 650 and Roadster 800)

2000

 

Presentation of the Roadster-range with 650 cc- and 800 cc-engines and start of production

Presentation of the SACHS BEAST 1000 at the world´s largest international motorcycle exhibition, the Intermot in Munich

2001

 

February 2001: Management-Buy-Out by HSS Verwaltungs GmbH (Huhn/Schnorr/Summerer)

In October, SACHS takes over the general import of the leading Taiwan scooter-brand SYM for Germany.

2002

 

Since April SACHS has started the production of a limited edition of the legendary MUENCH MAMMUT 2000.

2003

 

Introduction of the first electronic bicycles with new recuperation in energy (range till 80km)

2004

 

Introduction of the MadAss 50
Both traditional two-wheeler companies of Nuremberg, the SACHS Fahrzeug- u. Motorentechnik GmbH and the Zweirad Union Grundbesitz AG were merged together. SACHS moved into new and modern production- and office facilities.

An exclusive distribution contract was signed with the french noble motorcycle producer VOXAN for the German and Austrian market.

2005

 

100 years serial production of motorized vehicles
Take-over of the SYM (Sanyang) spare part supply for the European market. Reentry to the US market with MadAss models
Founding of a Sachs Bikes OwnersClub

2006

 

120th anniversary of the company
Serial production of the MadAss 125
